Though the Baldwinsville girls bowling team was unable to keep up with the likes of Fulton and Auburn in last Saturday’s Section III championship at Strike-N-Spare Lanes, it still came away with a big consolation prize.
Annie Peterson emerged in second place at the sectional individual tournament held earlier in the week, qualifying for the March 3-4 state championships at Valley Bowl in Waverly.
Unlike past years, the individual event was held separately from sectional competition. What’s more, only the top two bowlers advanced, unlike the six bowlers in past campaigns.
Thus, Peterson had to be good – and she was, earning a pinfall of 1,168, an average of 194.67 per game. That was second to Whitesboro’s Emily Porter, who won with 1,232.
In the sectional tournament that followed on Saturday, Peterson was fourth among individual bowlers with a 574 series, including a high game of 211. Brittni Flask finished 13th with a 513 set.
B’ville’s girls would take third place in the sectional team event with a total pinfall of 4.754. Fulton won the team title with 5,276, while Auburn (4,903) settled into second place.
Meanwhile, Ryan Zbikowski nearly took top individual honors on the boys side. Games of 268, 233 and 220 left Zbikowski with a 724 series, behind only Cicero-North Syracuse’s Joe Bodnar, who had a 733 set on his home lanes.
Also for the Bees, Sam Sojdak was 20th, with a 639 series, while Frank Mento was 25th with a 611 set.
