For the second time in the span of a week, the West Genesee boys swim team passed a major road test.
Mostly relying on second and third-place efforts, the Wildcats defeated Oswego, 103-83 on Tuesday to earn its 35th consecutive meet victory.
This came just five days after WG survived a 48-45 decision at Baldwinsville. Here, Oswego had strong individual performers like Drake Becksted, Zach Gerber and Reeve Callen to consider, so the Wildcats had to clean up in the other spots.
That included the opening 200 medley relay, where Joe Amedro, Jake Mullett, Matt O’Donnell and Jeff Hotaling sped to first place in a time of 1:43.14 to give WG a quick lead.
From there, the Wildcats used its depth to pile up points, even as the Bucs won the next five races on the docket. Not until Collin Zapisek cover the 500 freestyle in 5:13.69 did WG claim an individual race.
Prior to that, Ian Bushnell earned second place in both the 50 freestyle (23.31 seconds) and 100 freestyle (52.41 seconds), events where Gerber prevailed. Becksted would take the 200 individual medley (2:02.46) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.05).
Tyler Zapisek came close in the 100 butterfly, finishing second in 54.67 seconds as Callen prevailed in 54.45 seconds. But Amedro gave his side crucial points when he edged Oswego’s Jeremy Galvin, 1:03.71 to 1:03.81, and prevailed in the 100 backstroke.
