Going on separate paths after their Oct. 6 meeting, the Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy boys soccer teams would both find plenty of success.
Still with the top state Class A ranking and still with an undefeated mark, the Red Rams were emphatic in last Thursday’s game against Fulton, taking out the Red Raiders in a 5-0 shutout.
As usual, J-D’s defense turned away any possible Fulton opportunities, but more importantly the Rams’ attack converted on its chances, moving in front 2-0 by halftime and doing even better after the break.
Tom Lukow, with a pair of goals, and Jimmy Fazio, with one goal and one assist, led the charge. Pablo Martinez and Noel Williams also scored, while defenders Dan Canfield and Eric Nuss earned assists, as did Andrew Lee. Nate Sturgeon only had to make three saves.
On Saturday, J-D finally suffered a blemish – but only a slight one, as it went to Liverpool and played the Class AA contenders to a 0-0 draw.
Playing on grass instead of the LHS Stadium artificial turf, J-D clamped down on defense, leaning on the likes of Canfield, Nuss, Jesse Evensky and Jamie McBurney to keep Liverpool from too many chances. Sturgeon finished with five saves and his eighth shutout of the year.
CBA, meanwhile, hosted Mexico last Tuesday night and had one of its best offensive efforts of the season, dismissing the Tigers 5-1.
Showing nice offensive balance, the Brothers got those five goals from five different players – Manny Collins, Joe Potenza, Andrew DePerro, Steve Castellini and Austin Higgins. Austin Dukat, C.J. Ponge and Keith Haynth joined DePerro and Potenza with assists.
Then CBA improved on that production in Thursday’s 7-0 shutout of Phoenix, getting all sorts of players involved.
Again, no one got two goals. Instead, Castellini, DePerro, Alex Chrisman and Matt Stedman each finished with one goal and one assist, while Potenza, Paul Civello and Parker Johnston also scored. Will Brower, Mitch Bower and Tim Corapi gained assists.
