So there was another close contest between teams from Baldwinsville and West Genesee, and this time it was the Bees finishing on top.
No big deficits or rallies, no last-minute heroics, no fifth down, just a well-played girls tennis match between undefeated sides where the 7-0 Bees, boosted by dominant singles play and one breakthrough in doubles, beat the 11-0 Wildcats in a 4-3 decision Tuesday afternoon on the B’ville school campus.
It started, as always, with first singles star Kahlei Reisinger, who took apart Nicole Klinger in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. Right after, Taylor Ferrari finished off Alyssa Indelicato 6-1, 6-1, while Amari Pollard put together a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kelsey Abdo.
Now B’ville needed a point in doubles. Remarkably, the teams of Maddie Fiello-Colleen Morgan, Shannon Hurley-Taylor Slink and Kelsey Leitgeb-Katherine Schumacher all lost by the same scores – 7-6 in the first set and 6-3 in the second set.
So it was up to Natalie Kot and Hannah Mautz in third doubles, and they lost the first set 6-4 to WG’s tandem of Danielle Fofi and Olivia Wolfram. But Kot and Mautz rolled through the second set 6-2 and, when they won the third set 6-4, had clinched the team victory.
With little time to rest, B’ville had to turn around Thursday and confront Fayetteville-Manlius. Despite singles success, the Bees could not halt the Hornets’ epochal win streak in a 5-2 defeat.
Reisinger rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 sweep over Meghan Muraco, while Pollard had the same sort of effort as she beat Kara Goldberg 6-1, 6-2. However, Ferrari ran into Jessica Guarino and took a 6-2, 6-3 loss.
B’ville really got beat, though, in doubles play as F-M took all four matches without dropping a set. Kot and Schumacher got to a first set tie-breaker, but lost to Laurin Goldberg and Alexandra Millimaci 7-6, 6-2. Fiello and Morgan had a 7-5, 6-1 defeat to Rhiannon Iorio and Carly Romano.
