Pet-owners on the Near and South West Side are encouraged to bring their animals to the next CNY Animal Welfare Coalition free Healthy Pet Clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at St. Lucy’s Church, 425 Gifford St.
The clinic is for pet owners in these neighborhoods, and owners must bring identification and proof of financial need. Dogs must be leashed and muzzled, and cats brought in carriers. Requested donation for the clinic is $10 per animal.
Dogs and cats will receive veterinary exams and critical vaccinations, if their owners have financial need. The Shamrock Animal Fund, along with many other volunteer animal welfare agencies in Central New York, area veterinarians and Cornell University’s Hospital for Animals Shelter program, organized the series of three clinics to serve neighborhoods that lack veterinary hospitals.
The first clinic, held in September, served nearly 60 dogs and cats from 40 families. More than 30 volunteers helped make the clinic a success. Owners walked for blocks, biked and took the bus to bring their pets to the clinic, which took a year of planning by animal advocates.
Veterinarians will perform exams, vaccinate for rabies, distemper and other shots, and also offer flea and tick preventative and educate pet owners on the importance of regular veterinary care. Some spay/neuter vouchers will be available.
A third clinic is scheduled at St. Lucy’s from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.
