Still pushing itself to join the elite ranks in the Onondaga High School League, the Skaneateles girls swim team is off to a successful start in 2011.
For its opening meet Thursday night at the Community Center, Skaneateles took on Cazenovia and easily claimed the battle of Laker sides by a score of 100-77.
It started with 200 medley relay, where Rachel DeWitt, Kaleigh Nicholson, Krissy Chalupnicki and Nikki Cole claimed first place in a time of 2:08.09.
Far from done, DeWitt went right to the 200 freestyle and earned first place in 2:09.55. Later on, in the 100 backstroke, DeWitt, in a clocking of 1:08.10, won again.
Cole waited for her title until the 50 freestyle, where she beat the field in 26.70 seconds. Katherine Hirsch picked up 143.70 points on the diving board.
Rachel Teixeria earned a victory in the 200 individual medley (2:33.75), with Haley Bucholz prevailing in the 100 butterfly (1:43.76). Taylor Hill needed 6:55.76 to swim the 500 freestyle as Halle King got through the 100 breaststroke in 1:30.14.
That proved just a warm-up, though, for next Wednesday’s big home meet against Christian Brothers Academy, who staged a dramatic 95-91 win over Jamesville-DeWitt in its opener as its top swimmer, Summer Schmitt, broke two J-D pool records and helped in a pair of relay wins.
