In two separate venues, area high school boys track and field teams went after the top honors in various Section III championship meets. As the hosts of the Class B championship meet on Friday, Marcellus did not get that many favors, only taking third place with 78 points behind Holland Patent (203 points) and South Jefferson (91 points). Solvay had 49 points for sixth place as Jordan-Elbridge, in Class B-2, took fourth with 65 points. Jesse Garn gave the home team a boost when he won the B-1 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:51.14, while Solvay’s Cody McCarthy (10:31.82) was third. Ryan Manahan joined in by winning the 3,200-meter run in 9:33.39, with the Bearcats’ Matt Cregan fifth, as John Bell took fifth in the mile. Nate Waite was fifth in the 100-meter dash, just as Justin Garn took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles. In the 4×800 relay, Bell, Garn, Manahan and Joe Fallon were second in 8:19.76, while Solvay eased into fourth place in 8:56.65. The Bearcats also got fourth in the 4×100 in 47.70 seconds. Chaz Hayes gave Marcellus a victory in the long jump, going 19 feet 7 3/4 inches, with Solvay’s John Salvagno (19 feet 3/4 inch) in third and Nate Waite (18 feet 11 1/4 inches) fourth. Hayes added a second in the triple jump when he went 39 feet 11 1/2 inches. The Mustangs’ tandem of Rob Coon and Nick Huss tied for third in the pole vault, each clearing 11 feet 6 inches. Brian O’Connell was third in the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet 6 inches as Nick Stogsdill (5 feet 4 inches) was fourth. Solvay’s Nick Cometti excelled in the sprints, going to second in the 100-meter dash in 11.45 seconds, just behind HP’s Craig Ashcroft (11.41), and also taking second in the 200-meter dash in 23.13 seconds, edged out by South Jefferson’s Zach Woodward by one-hundredth of a second. Josh Marotti was fourth in the pentathlon with 2,105 points. On the B-2 side of the meet, J-E’s Greg Bader won the 800 in a time of 2:03.13, more than two seconds ahead of the field, and got to second in the mile in 4:41.30, with Jack Gugle (4:47.12) in fourth. Gugle got to second in the 3,200 in 10:46.83, while Steve Slonosky was second in the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:29.40. Andrew Forward cleared 5 feet 10 inches for third place in the high jump, adding a fourth in the triple jump (39 feet 1/2 inch) and fifth in the high jump. J-E also saw Paul Nelson earn 2,019 points for third place in the pentathlon. Carlin Coomey was fifth in the 400 and triple jump and sixth in the long jump, with Nick Byrnes fourth in the 200 and sixth in the 100. Since they were a combined team, Westhill/Bishop Ludden were in the Class A-1 meet at Canastota on May 27, where it earned 60.5 points for fourth place. Indian River won with 143 points. Jack Honis won again, as he covered the 110 high hurdles in 15.76 seconds to edge IR’s Rayshaun-Shakur Clark (15.82). Corey Wilkinson had a second-place shot put toss of 43 feet 7 1/2 inches, and also was second in the discus with 124 feet 11 inches as Carson Hicks (122 feet 2 inches) was third. Tim Sheridan earned third place in the pentathlon with 2,211 points, while Matt Trendowski took third in the 400 in 53.59 seconds. Casey Bunce (10:30.34) and Peter Lynch (10:54.51) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000 steeplechase. Jon Moore ran to fifth in the mile in 5:10.33. The Warriors also took fifth in the 4×400 relay in 3:50.55, plus sixth in the 4×800 and 4×100. Mike Herholtz earned sixth (10 feet) in the pole vault.
