Caz boys rise to third at sectional indoor track meet

Championship week for Section III’s indoor track and field teams began Sunday with the boys sectional meets, held at Hamilton College.

In Class B, Cazenovia had a strong showing as it finished with 70 points, just behind runner-up Clinton (74 points) as Marcellus took the top spot with 105 points.

A victory came for the Lakers in the 4×200 relay, where Matt Donovan, Tom Mackowiak, Jose Wells and Dylan Muller finished in 1:39.98, more than two seconds ahead of Clinton (1:42.36) at the line. On his own, Muller earned a victory in the triple jump, going 39 feet 3 1/2 inches to beat Canastota’s Chris Barnhart (38 feet 5 inches), who was second.

The Lakers’ Pat Dermody had a strong meet. He was second in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 9:49.80, just behind Marcellus’ Jesse Garn (9:47.67), added a sixth in the mile and teamed with Noah Shephard, Nick Genzel and Tyler Dunkle for second place in the 4×800 relay in 9:35.46.

Shephard joined John Stoker, Conner Polsin and Forest Blanchard as they finished second in the 4×400 relay in 3:55.87, not far behind Clinton (3:52.90). Mackowiak was third in the 55-meter dash in 7.10 seconds.

Wells went 17 feet 1/2 inch in the long jump, good for third place as Donovan (16 feet 6 3/4 inches) was fourth. Shephard got fifth in the 600-meter run and Polsin was fifth in the 300-meter dash. Blanchard cleared 5 feet 6 inches for fifth place in the high jump Muller got sixth place in the pole vault. Greyson Barr earned sixth place in the shot put.

Meanwhile, in Class A Oneida also finished third, tying Mexico as both had 62 points and Chittenango (21 points) shared seventh place with East Syracuse-Minoa. Jamesville-Dewitt (120 points) rolled to the title.

Jimmy Moyer excelled for the Indians, winning three times. He cleared 6 feet 4 inches to dominate the high jump, took the the triple jump with a best attempt of 39 feet 11 1/2 inches and also conquered the long jump, going 20 feet 1 1/2 inches. Dale Ortlieb was fifth in the high jump behind Moyer.

Dan Margo chimed in for Oneida by winning the shot put with a top toss of 47 feet 11 inches. Connor McCarthy ran to third place in the mile in 4:49.91, where Morrisville-Eaton’s Austin Hirsch was fourth (4:52.66). Hirsch also was third in the 1,000 in 2:52.30 as McCarthy, in the 3,200, claimed fourth place.

Chittenango’s Jason Given claimed second place in the 600 in 1:28.22 and also was sixth in the 600. Given, Josiah Durfee, Greg Foster and Josh Bennington took third in the 4×400 in 3:54.48. Foster, Durfee, Brad Murray and Jason Ceresoli got fifth in the 4×800 relay in 9:28.97. Chittenango’s Josh Bennington rose to fourth in the high jump.
