Only a couple of points separated the Jamesville-DeWitt cross country teams from getting both of the Section III Class A team titles last Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School. On the same course where the 2011 state championships will take place, the girls Red Rams fended off the challenge of the combined Westhill/Bishop Ludden squad, earning 43 points to the Warrors’ 46. Whitesboro was third with 71 points. Ameena Dye led J-D’s effort, the senior taking third place in 20 minutes, 49.5 seconds. Laura Wengert worked her way to sixth place, in 21:08.7, while Katie Pinkes earned ninth place in 22:05.6. The Rams still needed to make up for the fact that Westhill’s Jessica Curry and Betsey Black went 1-2, so Rebecca Bergman earned 12th place in 22:18.7 and three more runners would finish together to clinch matters. Avery Share closed out the scoring column when she crossed the line in 17th place in 23:18 flat. Rebecca Doss was 18th, in 23:23.1, while Megan Clark got 19th place in 23:30.8. Samantha Clemons was 23rd and Shelby Weinstein finished 35th. As for East Syracuse-Minoa, who was fourth with 90 points, Gabby Pallotta, by finishing seventh in 21:12.9, earned the fifth and final spot on the Section III All-Star squad that, with J-D, will go to this Saturday’s state championships at Lakeside Park in Pawling. Pallotta’s Spartans teammate, Megan Crandell, was 13th in 22:47.6, while Paige Courbat took 22nd in 23:43.0. Bridget Benz was 29th (24:11.3) and Brittany Kubecka got 31st place in 24:41.8. Over in the Class A boys meet, J-D nearly earned its own team title, finishing with 56 points, edged out by Westhill, who won with 54 points as ESM, with 95 points, settled for fifth place. Individually, it turned into a battle between J-D’s Austin Davis and ESM’s Mike Coogan. Though Coogan was favored, Davis soon got away from the field and finished in 17:00.3, well clear of Coogan, who still took second in 17:13 flat. Both Davis and Coogan advance to the state meet, but the Rams could not win despite having five runners in the top 20. Dan Driscoll was 10th, in 18:31.2, while Bill Hohreiter got 13th place in 18:34.8. Isaac Tupper was 15th (18:35.4) and Jack Healy earned 17th place in 18:42.7. Nick Harron (18:48.6) landed in 20th place. As for ESM, Jesse Perrone earned 12th place in 18:34.2, while Louis Ferrone gained 22nd place in 19:03.8. Brandon Miller was 30th (19:50.4) and Paul Schneible got 33rd in 19:52.6. Nick Scnug, Nolan Garris and Connor Garris also reached the top 50. Over in the Class C boys meet, CBA’s Brendan Smith earned a berth in the state meet by taking third in a time of 17:07.4, bettered only by Holland Patent twin brothers Cody Racha (16:34.7) and Dylan Racha (16:41.7). Smith’s teammate, Jack Lenkiewicz, was 10th in 17:54.2. In the Class C girls event, CBA was sixth out of 14 teams with 176 points. Corey Hucko finished 12th in a clocking of 21:23.0 as Maire-Kate McGlynn finished 20th in 21:45.6. Michaela Gildemeyer was 34th and Rachel Zajdel got 40th place.
