By the time the Section III tennis championships had concluded Tuesday afternoon, singles and doubles players from Fayetteville-Manlius, Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy, had all reached the top.
That included an all-F-M final in Division I doubles at Drumlins Country Club. In the end, Carly Romano and Alilson Vizgaitis had the victory, taking just two sets to beat Katie Muller and Rhiannon Iorio 6-3, 6-1.
To reach the final, Muller and Iorio had to beat another F-M duo, topping Caitlin Welker and Kara Goldberg 6-3, 6-0. Romano and Vizgaitis shut out the only outsiders, Allison Theberge and Maranda Dowling (West Genesee), 6-0, 6-0 in the other semifinal.
Up in singles, Sienna Susko got to the finals by beating Francine White (Utica Proctor) 6-1, 6-3, but lost in the championship match to Auburn’s Claire Minnoe 6-1, 6-2.
J-D echoed the F-M doubles teams by claiming both spots in the Division II singles finals at Utica Parkway Courts.
Rea Puka earned a 6-4, 6-3 semifinals win over Colleen Moore (Whitesboro), while Kyrin Pollock beat Fariel Asmat (New Hartford) 6-4, 6-1. In the championship match, Puka got all the key points, beating Pollock 6-4, 6-3. In doubles, the Red Rams’ tandem of Ashi Masrani and Katie Cieplicki lost to Alex Romano and Katie Steates (New Hartford) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the Division III tournament at Gold’s Gym Liverpool, CBA’s Olivia Messineo stayed unbeaten and won the singles title by beating two of her teammates.
First, Messineo topped Colleen Cavanaugh 6-0, 6-2. Then, after Shilpa Kamani beat Cazenovia’s Elizabeth Palmer by those same 6-0, 6-2 scores in the other semifinal, Messineo rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kamani for the title.
And it didn’t stop there for the Brothers, as Becky Scullin and Nicole Kalhorn won the doubles crown. Scullin and Kalhorn handled Sarah Dart and Lizzy Kniffin (Homer) 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals, then beat Maddy Wetterhahn and Julianne Rehley (South Jefferson) 6-1, 7-5 in the finals.
Just by getting to the semifinals, all of these players advanced to the state qualifier, which begins Thursday at Drumlins. The top three singles and doubles finishers advance to the Nov. 6-8 state championships at Eastside Racquet Club.
