Through its first six games, the Hamilton boys soccer team had stayed unbeaten. Yet it knew things would be intense when it met up with Poland for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon. Sure enough, the Emerald Knights and Tornadoes battled into overtime, but it was Poland that would break though in the extra period and prevail 1-0. Hamilton and Poland are quite familiar with each other, having met in both regular-season and post-season classics for the last four years. The Tornadoes won Section III Class D semifinals in 2006 and ’07, but the Emerald Knights prevailed in both the ’08 and ’09 championship games. Naturally, both teams came into this showdown undefeated — Hamilton at 6-0, Poland at 4-0-1. And for 80 minutes of regulation, the two sides probed each other. The Emerald Knights did earn six corner kicks to the Tornadoes’ two, but each time those chances were denied, keeping the game at 0-0. So it went to overtime. Seven minutes into the first extra period, Poland’s Derek Bush hit a cross from the right side, and when Hamilton did not pick up Harrison Rosenburgh in the middle, Rosenburgh flung a shot past Kinnon Nolan-Finkel into the net to give the Tornadoes the win. Hamilton did not fret for long, going to its neighbors from Morrisville-Eaton on Monday and blanking the Warriors 3-0. M-E managed just two shots as the Emerald Knights controlled the flow of play. Dan Kraynak proved the central figures, scoring once and assisting on goals by Sam Owens and Drew Thompson as Owens also earned an assist. Warrior goalie Jake Landherr had 14 saves. Hamilton would have another major struggle on Friday against fellow Center State Conference leader Mount Markham, the game ending in a 0-0 draw. Phil Douchinsky and Lucas Rhyde led an Emerald Knights defense that held the Mustangs to six shots, all of which Nolan-Finkel stopped. Hamilton had far more chances, in both regulation and overtime, but Mount Markham goalie Alex Wrobel recorded 12 saves to preserve his end of the shutout. Canastota started the week at the .500 mark, but lost Monday to Waterville 2-1. All the goals came in the second half as Michel DalBianco scored twice for the Indians and John Iaconis accounted for the Raiders’ lone goal. In defeat, Kevin Hoyt made 10 saves.
