Game after game, and week after week, the Skaneateles boys soccer team stands up against the best efforts its opposition can muster while staying undefeated and atop the OHSL Liberty division standings.
Now the Lakers had a chance to impress folks beyond its league when, on Friday and Saturday, it played host to the inaugural Finger Lakers Invitational on its new turf field. Twice, Skaneateles played strong Class AA opponents — and twice it prevailed.
All of it began Friday night, a memorable program of soccer that culminated with the Lakers going to overtime to knock off long-time power Cicero-North Syracuse 2-1.
Not only were the Northstars ranked in the state Class AA top 10, it had not even allowed a goal this season prior to a 1-0 defeat to Baldwinsville earlier in the week.
Skaneateles knew it could not afford falling far behind.
Yet CNS did get the first goal, Jon Cary connecting in the first half off a feed from Saio Barzee. Skaneateles immediately countered and drew a foul inside the 18-yard penalty box, meaning a penalty kick. Jeff Baldetti beat Dan DeBottis, and it was even 1-1.
And there it stayed, through the rest of the first half and the entire second half. Trevor Diamond had one of his best days in goal, recording seven saves, two less than DeBottis, as the sides ended up going to overtime.
With one goal the difference in a sudden-victory format, Skaneateles pushed — and it paid off when Ryan Farrell, taking a pass from A.J. RIchichi, flung a shot past DeBottis as the Lakers prevailed.
All this followed a tournament opener where West Genesee, also down 1-0, also came back — and also won 2-1 in overtime, Jake Sutherland notching the game-winner.
So it was the Lakers facing the Wildcats in Saturday’s championship game. Thanks to Kevin Rice, no extra effort was needed as Skaneateles won the title 3-1.
With a 1-0 lead going into halftime, Skaneateles did not feel too safe. So it helped that Rice would take over, finishing with two goals as Baldetti got his second goal in as many days as Skaneateles drew clear.
CNS pounded Corning 3-0 in the consolation game, Darren Cooper scoring twice on the Northstars’ behalf.
The tournament wins left Skaneateles boasting an 8-0 record as it went to Jordan-Elbridge Tuesday for its only action this week.
