SYRATHON Race Series continues in Strathmore

The Greater Strathmore Neighborhood Association will be host the 4-Mile Parks Run at 2 p.m. Sunday Sept. 26, showcasing the Strathmore neighborhood and raising money for the GSNA.

The Strathmore course is unique in that it combines road racing with cross-country elements. The race starts in picturesque Upper Onondaga Park (near the Crossett Street entrance) in Syracuse, and includes streets in the Strathmore neighborhood. A few years ago, the race was expanded to include the Woodland Reservoir and the water tower, which was once part of the Mountain Goat race and has panoramic views of the city. The annual race began in 2001 in memory of Jim Dwyer, Jr., a lifelong Strathmore resident that died prematurely of cardiac failure at the age of 31. The Jim Dwyer, Jr. Memorial Fund is one of the race’s primary sponsors.

The Parks Run is part of the Syrathon Race Series, a series of six road races through beautiful city parks and along charming city streets. Running them all will earn the right to call yourself a “Syrathoner.” Complete at least four of the six races and become eligible for prizes, including Technical Shirts, gift certificates, and even a Flat Screen TV! There will also be random drawings following each race for more great prizes, including Brooks Running shoes (just register at the Syrathon Fleet Feet table on race day).

The festivities include a Kids Fun Run following the completion of the four-mile race. There will also be a hot dogs, burgers, and refreshments available to purchase, with proceeds supporting the South Side American Little League. Every Parks Run participant will also receive free Gannon’s Homemade Ice Cream.

Runners and walkers can sign up for the Parks Run, in advance, at strathmoreparksrun.com, or by calling 415-1615. Race day registration is from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at the Picnic Pavilion in Onondaga Park.
