Building a Class B girls volleyball power, and winning both Section III and regional Class B titles were major accomplishments for the Cazenovia Lakers — but it wanted more. To that end, the Lakers moved its schedule to the fall for the 2010 season. Under long-time coach Brian Ellithorpe, Cazenovia will play an independent schedule, mostly against Class AA opponents, then pursue a possible state championship in November. There’s reason to think that a title run could happen. Last winter, Cazenovia went 15-5, reaching the Section III Class B finals before falling to Skaneateles — who also moved its schedule to the fall. The two Laker rivals will square off Sept. 24 and Oct. 27. Just five seniors graduated, leaving the Lakers with a veteran roster that can stand up to most of its large-school opponents. Cazenovia’s “autumn” debut fell on a hot, steamy Thursday afternoon where, inside Buckley Gym, the Lakers stepped up and beat Liverpool in four games. Fired up for the occasion, Cazenovia breezed to a 25-18 victory in the first game. The second game proved pivotal, as both sides squandered numerous game points before, at 27-27, the Lakers inched in front and pulled it out 29-27. The third game proved just as long — but on the brink of a sweep, Cazenovia fell, 30-28. Shaking that off, the Lakers dominated the fourth game and finished out the match 25-14. Lizzy Reed, who played in the Empire State Games last July In Buffalo, compiled 10 kills and 19 digs, plus four aces. Chelsea Lauria set up points with her 24 assists, to go with three aces, three kills and three digs. On a balanced front line with Reed, Hannah Koennecke had nine kills, while Amber Robinson and Alexis Markowski produced six kills apiece. Melanie Arehart had four kills. Koennecke and Markowski each got seven digs. Cazenovia has its first road match on Wednesday, at West Genesee, before going to Saturday’s Union-Endicott Tournament, just east of Binghamton.
