A trio of high-profile victories highlighted the Cazenovia girls track and field team’s efforts in Thursday’s Section III state qualifying meet at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.
Sophomore Paige Biviano emerged as the top athlete in the five-event pentathlon. Biviano ran the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.55 seconds, cleared 5 feet 1 3/4 inches in the high jump, threw the shot put 29 feet 4 1/2 inches, went 16 feet 4 1/2 inches in the high jump and ran 800 meters in 2:39.74.
That gave Biviano 3,062 points, well clear of any Division II (small school) foe, and also the best overall, 37 points ahead of the Division I champion, CNS’s Jasmine Thompson. The fact that Biviano went more than 16 seconds faster in the 800 made up Thompson’s lead from previous events.
Cazenovia also won two different relay races. In the 4×100, Piper Gianforte, Jillian Vogl, Audrey Bowers and Ashley Winn won an exciting race, edging South Lewis, 50.56 seconds to 50.61, to advance to this weekend’s state championships at Vestal High School near Binghamton.
As if that wasn’t enough, in the 4×400 the Lakers struck again. Vogl and Winn joined Ellen Burr and Hollie Marcelle to post a time of 4:05.89, just ahead of Holland Patent (4:06.95) at the wire.
Individually, Gianforte was third in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet 6 inches to meet the state qualifying standard on the number. Winn also took third, in the 100-meter dash in 12.90 seconds, as Vogl got seventh place in 13.49 seconds. Rae Tobey was 10th in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:23.77.
