For the East Syracuse-Minoa boys lacrosse team, just getting a third shot at Jamesville-DeWitt in the Section III Class B playoffs was dramatic enough. In the opening round of the Class B playoffs on May 27, the Spartans found itself in yet another overtime game against no. 5 seed Whitesboro, but made the necessary plays at the end to elminate the Warriors 7-6. Neither team could gain any separation throughout the contest. Whitesboro slowed things down in the first half, and were effective enough as the sides went to halftime in a 3-3 tie. ESM tried to quicken the pace in the third quarter, only to have Whitesboro match them, goal for goal, and keep it 5-5. With both sides trying to avoid a mistake, the final period of regulation was just as tight, each side converting just once. So it came down to OT. With a season on the line, Quadear Mike passed it to Garrett Smith, who already had two goals on the night. Smith, open near the net, flung a shot past Whitesboro goalie Nolan Puleo for the game-winner. Four different players — Mike, Ken Cannon, Tom Rosaschi and Mike Cummings — joined Smith in the goal-scoring column, with James Landry and Nick Capriotti earning assists. Chris Rosso had another terrific game in the net, recording 11 saves. Sure enough, ESM plays J-D, the undefeated top seed and no. 1-ranked team in the state, in Saturday night’s Class B semifinals at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium. The winner returns to CNS Wednesday to face Carthage or Auburn in the championship game.
