To be sure, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls lacrosse team has nothing other than the long-term goal of a Section III championship in mind. However, the accomplishment of an undefeated regular season cannot be overlooked, and the Red Rams pulled it off with three more wins to build its total to 16-0. Of those, none proved tougher than Saturday’s regular-season finale, a tense battle with Cortland that saw J-D behind most of the way before coming back to beat the Purple Tigers by a score of 8-7. All through the first half, Cortland stayed patient and controlled the tempo, but still converted enough to forge a 5-3 lead, the first time all year that J-D had trailed at halftime. Unaccustomed to this drama, the Rams still fought back, using a first-rate defense to hold the Purple Tigers in check, and give itself time to rally. Each of Tara Prosak’s 10 saves proved to be imporant. It was Tori Nies, who finished with three goals and one assist, who put home what proved to be the game-winner late in regulation. Ashriel West matched Nies with three goals and one assist, too, while Ally Loewy and Lauren Swan got single goals. Taylor Bierwagen joined Swan in the assist column. For Cortland, Marissa Mastronadi led the way with three goals and one assist. Going to Chittenango last Monday night, the Rams were steady, consistent and relentless as it beat the Bears 14-7. Even with Chittenango star Jenna Barber notching five goals, J-D’s defense made sure that none of Barber’s teammates got involved to any extent. Meanwhile, the Rams worked toward a 7-4 halftime lead and just kept on building the margin. West, with four goals and one assist, set the pace, with Morgan Freeman adding her own three-goal hat trick. Swan had two goals and two assists, while Nies also scored twice. Bierwagen earned a pair of assists as Liz Beville, Frannie Haunfeiner and Taylor Fallon each had one goal. The 15th regular-season home victory came in last Wednesday’s trip to Whitesboro, where it ran past the Warriors 24-7 with its highest goal total of the entire season. Not content with a 14-5 halftime lead, J-D also reached double digits in the second half, too, moving to the net at will even in running time. This allowed seven different players to most multiple tallies, West being the most productive as she earned five goals and four assists, while Swan and Freeman both found the net four times. Swan added a pair of assists. Nies backed up her three-goal hat trick with four assists, while Bierwagen posted two goals and three assists. Beville andLoewy each had two goals and one assist. Even Tara Prosak got on the board after sister Marie replaced her in the net. Despite the 16-0 mark, J-D only got the no. 2 seed in the Class C-1 playoffs. Since 18 teams qualified for the tournament, it got split into C-1 and C-2 halves. In Monday’s C-1 quarterfinal, the Rams meet no. 7 seed Mexico, looking to host a semifinal Wednesday against Marcellus or Chittenango. The Class C-1 final takes place Friday at Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium.
