Slowly, area high school golf teams are making the transition from the regular season to the post-season, as the matches grow in importance. Oneida and Vernon Verona Sherrill went to McConnellsville for last Tuesday’s Tri-Valley League Tournament — and the girls Red Devils nearly finished on top. With a score of 152, VVS was second only to heavy favorite Whitesboro, who won with 149. Freshman Amanda Snizek led the effort, posting a season-best nine-hole total of 47 to win the individual crown by one shot over Whitesboro’s Stephanie Rahn. Behind Snizek, Micaela Shay shot a 51 and Brittany Heysler (back from a brief illness) added a 54 for the Red Devils. Oneida was fifth with a 179 as Carley Parker and Kaytlynn Lynch each shot 56 for the Indians. As this was going on, VVS also placed second in the boys Tri-Valley Tournamen at Hidden Valley, finishing at 159, far off New Hartford’s winning total of 146. Kyle Renwick led the Red Devils, posting an 18-hole total of 78 that left him fourth among individuals. Oneida, with Chris Wurst shooting an 83, finished sixth with 175 as New Hartford’s Derek Bard took individual honors with a 72. A day earlier, Canastota’s boys team went to Kanon Valley for the Section III Class B tournament and placed 10th in an 11-team field with 469, well of the pace of 403 that champion Skaneateles would establish. None of the individual Raiders would reach the top 20 and qualify for the overall sectional tournament this week at Seven Oaks.
