Forgive anyone who might have thought that Tuesday’s OHSL Freedom division track and field championship meets were little more than a Jamesville-DeWitt exhibition with seven special guests.
In the girls meet, the Red Rams won with an astonishing 232 points, with host Chittenango far behind in second place with 86 points. It was a bit closer on the boys side, but J-D still put 155.5 points on the ledger, with Mexico (94 points) taking the runner-up spot.
That girls meet featured multiple wins from, among others, Marae Tearney, who claimed three titles.
Tearney ran the 100-meter dash in 13.01 seconds, edging Chittenango’s Courtney Dyer (13.04), and beat out teammate Liz Pieri, 27.13 seconds to 27.55, in the 200-meter dash.
Tearney added a shot put title by throwing it 33 feet 10 3/4 inches as Sierra Vasiliou (31 feet 7 inches) was second.
Vasiliou also was third in the long jump (15 feet 6 1/2 inches), where Natalie Mannion won by going 16 feet 1 1/4 inches. Mannion didn’t stop there, either, also winning the triple jump with a best attempt of 32 feet 4 3/4 inches as Amanda Tan (32 feet 1 1/2 inches) slid into second place.
In the pole vault, Tan won by clearing 7 feet 6 inches with fewer misses than a host of contenders that included Katy Pieri. Margaret Fuller took third in the high jump (5 feet 2 inches) as Liz Pieri finished fifth. Olivia Costa and Tangela Hightower were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the discus.
J-D won a pair of relays, too, overcoming a disqualification in the 4×100. Mannion, Linsay Royer and the Pieri sisters ruled in the 4×400 (4:13.77) as Eileen Cody, Ameena Dye, Mina Huckins and Paige Morrow took the 4×800 in 10:19.33.
In the five-event pentathlon, Danielle Doss won with 1,945 points, 180 ahead of Chittenango’s Katrina Karbowniczak. Hannah Stefl was second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:45.35, with Rebecca Doss in third. Visser also was second in the 1,500-meter run in 5:17.26.
Cody would pull away and take the 3,000-meter run in 10:48 flat, beating the field by more than a minute as Dye took the 1,500 in 5:13.74. Morrow would emerge in the 800-meter run, prevailing in 2:29.04, with Rebecca Doss third in 2:31.61.
Katy Pieri would go 1-2 with Royer in the 400-meter dash, Pieri winning in 1:02.43 to beat Royer by one-hundredth of a second. Courtney Ellis won, too, taking the 400-meter hurdles in 1:12.73 as Fuller finished sixth. Ellis was fifth in the 100 hurdles.
J-D’s boys title included Bumkoth Jiak sweeping to wins in the mile (4:31.49) and 800-meter run, the latter in 1:55.01 as Austin Davis (2:01.62) finished second in the 800 and third (4:46.28) in the mile.
David Salbert dominated the triple jump, going 43 feet 9 1/2 inches, with Tim Kendrick (39 feet 5 3/4 inches) in fourth. Also, in the 4×100 relay, Salbert teamed with Will Sterriker, Taumeras Howard and Michael Meyer for another victory in 45.12 seconds. And in the 4×400, Salbert, Smith, Sterriker and Tim Kendrick won in 3:33.67.
Michael Paul earned his own sweep of the throwing events. He tossed the shot put 44 feet 9 1/4 inches, beating Brent Fallon (42 feet 4 1/2 inches), who was second, and Paul also prevailed in the discus by heaving it 118 feet 9 inches as Fallon took fifth.
Ira Griffin was victorious in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 22.90 seconds, the only sub-23 seconds time. Griffin also ran to second in the 100-meter dash in 11.50 seconds, as Sterriker took third in the 110 high hurdles (16.47 seconds) and third in the long jump, just ahead of Tyler Petersen in fourth place.
Kendrick and Petersen joined Max Smith and Alex Wilmot to take second in the 4×800 relay in 8:35.15. Will Hohreiter was third in the 3,200-meter run (10:41.52).
Sam Spalding was fourth in the pentathlon, while Petersen took fourth in the 400 hurdles and Tom Wilson took sixth in the 400. Wilmot was sixth in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet 6 inches.
