Marcellus girls lacrosse tops Westhill

With a solid all-around effort, the Marcellus girls lacrosse team put a dent in Westhill’s plans for a winning season.

The Mustangs and Warriors squared off Friday night, and the high-scoring duo of Nora Barry and Erin Walter had much to do with Marcellus prevailing by a score of 14-10.

Improving its own record to 10-5, Marcellus did enough in the first half to inch out in front, 7-5. The second half followed the same order, mainly because Barry and Walter kept converting.

Barry finished with six goals and one assist, and the Warriors couldn’t converge on her because Walter was hurting them with five goals of her own. Andrea Burrows and Meghan Connors each had one goal and two assists, with Leea Sinay contributing one goal and one assist. Catherine Nolan also had an assist.

As for Westhill, who fell to 6-7, Emily Haggerty had half her team’s production, with five goals, while Caroline Buonocore scored three times. Brenna Rainone and Maggie Tripodi had matching totals of one goal and two assists. Morgan Roach finished with 14 saves.

Marcellus had already taken a setback earlier in the week, having gone to Cazenovia last Tuesday and, in the gathering darkness, lost to the Lakers by the same 14-10 margin by which it would beat Westhill later.

At 4-8, desperate to get back in the playoff picture, Cazenovia slowed things down in the first half and inched out in front 5-4. Even as the pace quickened in the second half, the Mustangs found itself left behind, and stymied by the 15 saves Laker goalie Brodie Shephard put up.

Barry had four goals and one assist, with Walter adding three goals as Sinay, Connors and Kelly Welch got the other tallies. Cazeonvia had six players with multiple goals, as Katie Kleine and Gabby Jaquith each scored three times, with Kaitlyn Button, Hillary Bullock. Kendra Volz and Colleen Dougherty putting up matching two-goal totals.
