Dodgeball tourney highlights Team Rosebud fundraiser

A fundraiser featuring an adult dodgeball tournament will be held Sunday May 2 in support of a group of Marcellus women who have trained for months in preparation of the 2010 Susan G. Komen Boston 3-Day for the Cure.

Team Rosebud members Kathy Rogalia, Nancy MacLachlan, Kathy O’Connor, and Helen and Kristina Robb will walk 60 miles during three days to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and community-based breast health and education programs.

To help fund their cause, the team will hold a family-friendly fundraiser at Ultimate Goal Family Sports Center Saturday which will also feature kids’ games, food, caricatures, silent auctions and raffles and more.

“This is my first year participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure,” Rogalia said.

Rogalia is a two-time breast cancer survivor. “Through my participation in this event I know I am making a personal impact on the breast cancer movement.”

Rogalia was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March of 2003 while she was pregnant with her third child Hannah and raising her two sons Connor, then two, and Charlie, then six.

She endured three surgeries while pregnant and started chemotherapy after giving birth five weeks early. She had reconstructive surgery in 2004 and was diagnosed with breast cancer again in March of 2006. Rogalia underwent four more surgeries and seven weeks of radiation.

Her mother Rosemarie Collins is also a survivor of breast cancer; Team Rosebud was formed in celebration of Rosemarie.

The Susan G. Komen Boston 3-Day for the Cure runs July 23 to July 25. Walkers will cover around 20 miles each day, traveling at their own pace.

Team members must raise a minimum of $2,500 per person to participate in the walk.

According to Team Rosebud’s website, the group has so far raised a total of $3,220, just a third of their goal of $13,000.

In addition to attending the fundraiser, community members can donate to Team Rosebud online at 3day.org, (search for Kathy Rogalia).
