Through the first half of the season, the West Genesee baseball team has proven itself to be a dangerous opponent away from its Camillus confines.
Six days after winning at Baldwinsville, the Wildcats earned another quality road win when it went to Liverpool Wednesday and rode Turner Parry’s terrific pitching to a 5-2 victory over the Warriors.
Mixing up pitches, Parry, fast turning into WG’s big-game pitcher, went all seven innings, only allowing four hits against a potent Liverpool lineup on a windy afternoon. He also recorded seven strikeouts.
Meanwhile, WG went ahead in the top of the third inning, scoring twice off Siena-bound Liverpool ace Matt O’Kipney. Once again, it was Jason Capella delivering the big hit, as his bases-loaded single brought home both runs.
Then it went to 5-0 in the fifth inning, as Tyler Carr’s double brought home one run, and Erik Krohl’s single spread the margin to four before a Liverpool error led to another tally.
Parry lost his shutout in the sixth inning as Shawn Peake poked a two-run double, but Parry escaped that rally, then pitched a scoreless seventh to close it out.
It proved easier on Thursday, when WG bashed Nottingham 18-2. In both the first and third innings, the Wildcats produced seven runs, earning a 14-0 edge on its way to 17 hits.
Fresh off his pitching gem against Liverpool, Parry hit his team’s only home run and earned three RBIs. Capella, Greg Wadach, Eric Spencer and Matt Greco each drove in two runs, while Matt Petrick, Nick Dellefave, Brian Burns and Mike Sgroi had one RBI apiece.
Back on Wednesday, WG’s softball team smothered Nottingham 14-1, using eight total runs in the first two innings to take control early.
On its way to 15 hits, the Wildcats saw Kailey Ritch earn four of those hits, including a triple, and finish with two RBIs as she scored four times.
Gabby Rivers, Deanna Apps, Mackenzie Glynn and Ashley D’Avirro also drove in runs as D’Avirro also pitched and got the win. Apps matched Ritch with four runs scored as Rivers got three runs.
The Wildcats then bashed defending Class A champion Oneida 16-3 in a non-league game on Thursday, using eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control as it scored in five straight innings overall and finished with 20 hits.
Trish Andrews stepped up, with a triple and three RBIs. Glynn drove in two runs as Apps, D’Avirro, Ritch and Christina Sakran earned one RBI apiece. D’Avirro earned her second straight win on the mound, only allowing five hits and one three-run outburst in the sixth.
