Normally, a baseball team that scores 11 runs in an inning is a lock to win. For the Solvay Bearcats, though, that wasn’t the case.
Despite a massive outburst in the fourth inning, Solvay had to hang on at the end in last Monday’s game against Jordan-Elbridge, finally outlasting the Eagles 14-12.
It went back and forth early on, Solvay leading 3-1 before the Eagles pieced together three runs in the third and fourth innings to sneak into a 4-3 lead.
Then came the bottom of the fourth.
Between walks, hits and a parade of men crossing the plate, Solvay didn’t stop until it had scored 11 times and grabbed a 14-4 lead. Yet it wasn’t over.
J-E, who actually out-hit Solvay 12-7, earned six runs in the top of the sixth to climb back in it, then got two runs in the seventh before Kyle Groth finally closed things out.
R.J. Lostumbo earned the win as Groth, Taylor Delperuto and Ryan Bidwell each had two RBIs. John Savo also drove in a run. The Eagles saw Colby Auer, Jeff Donofrio and Leland Holmes (who pitched and took the lost) put up two RBIs apiece as Brennan Barrigar also drove in a run.
As this went on, Solvay’s softball team got a head start in its game at Jordan-Elbridge as it roared past the Eagles 11-4.
On a gloomy afternoon, the Bearcats got everyone to the plate in the bottom of the first inning against J-E pitcher Erin McLaughlin and put up six runs. The lead grew to 10-0 before the Eagles got on the board in the fourth.
Solvay had 11 hits overall, including Tiffney Guinta’s home run as she, along with Kiersten Dibello, each picked up a pair of RBIs. Jessica Savo, Nicole Groth and Angela Battaglia each drove in one run.
J-E had Liz Caspari and Natalie Andrianos drive in runs, but that was far from enough as the Bearcats’ Gabrielle Nurod picked up the win and Dibello pitched a solid relief stint.
