Siriano hits three HRs; Rocco nears no-hitter

Though Vernon Verona Sherrill and Oneida don’t meet until later this week, they haven’t wasted time adding to the memory bank this week.

In Monday’s action, Stephanie Siriano’s incredible power surge helped the Red Devils whip Clinton 14-1, while the Indians nearly got a no-hitter from Maria Rocco in a 9-1 win over Holland Patent.

Siriano simply dazzled players and fans on both sides against Clinton. Ignoring the rain and cool temperatures, she three times sent pitches over the fence for home runs, one of them a grand slam, and finished with a career-best seven RBIs.

As if that wasn’t enough, Siriano also pitched the full game, holding Clinton to two hits — or one less hit than Siriano’s home-run total. She also earned 11 strikeouts. Adding to the power surge, Ashley Palmer belted her own home run, while Nikki Scheibel doubled and tripled.

A more conventional saga took place back in Oneida, where Rocco’s improvement continued. For six innings, she held Holland Patent without a hit, only relenting when Golden Knights teammates Lexie Lyon and Melanie Gerace both doubled in the seventh.

Mad from back-to-back losses on the weekend (to Indian River and Seton Catholic), the Indians batted around in the bottom of the first inning, scoring six times, more than it would need.

Jenna Didio tripled as she, along with fellow veterans Morgan Murawski and Clare Henry, had two hits apiece and four total RBIs.
