It took just a week for the Baldwinsville boys track and field team to descend, just a little bit, from the high level of satisfaction it felt when it ended Cicero-North Syracuse’s 22-meet win streak on April 14.
First came the Northstars’ payback against the Bees when it won the John Arcaro Relays three days after the original meeting. Then, in Wednesday’s meet against Utica Proctor, B’ville got an up-close look at some of the area’s best athletes – and lost by a score of 78-63.
This defeat came despite B’ville’s Brian Kane setting the new Section III season mark in the high jump, which he won by clearing 6 feet 6 inches, two inches above his previous best.
As expected, the Bees dominated the distance races. Shaun Thompson won the mile in 4:38.3 and claimed the 3,200-meter title in 10:40.7, just ahead of teammate Josh Perez, who was second in 10:41.5.
Nate McCabe won the 800-meter run in 2:00.8 as Adam Pacheck finished second. Perez, Charles Parker, Brian Wisely and Alex Peinkofer put together a 4×800 relay victory in 9:37.0.
In a close 110 high hurdles, Andrew Hoover beat the Raiders’ Pedrick O’Carro, even though both finished in 16.2 seconds. Kyle Beckhusen cleared 9 feet to win the pole vault.
Proctor countered by dominating the sprints and jumping events, plus claiming the 4×100 (44.9 second) and 4×400 (3:32.4) relays, the latter a race where Hoover, Parker, Rudy Sapp and Chris Wicks finished in 3:35.2.
By far, Richard Peete was the Raiders’ biggest star in this meet, winning three times. He led a 1-2-3 sweep in the triple jump (43 feet 1 1/2 inches) ahead of Kane (40 feet 10 1/2 inches), took the long jump by going 19 feet 11 1/2 inches and was first in the 200-meter dash in 23.2 seconds.
B’ville’s girls team also lost to Proctor 89-50, even though Annie Peterson won both the 1,500-meter run (5:20.4) and 3,000-meter run (12:11.4). Jaimee Balloni took the 800-meter run (2:38.2) as Erica Miller won the shot put, tossing it 32 feet 2 1/2 inches.
