Moving to 2-0 on the season, the Fayetteville-Manlius track and field teams needed all of its strengths to withstand a dual challenge from Corcoran last Wednesday afternoon, winning 86-55 on the boys side and 78-58 on the girls side.
Chris Ruggeri helped the boys Hornets as he went 39 feet 11 inches in the triple jump and cleared 6 feet in the high jump with fewer misses than the Cougars’ Jalen Sanders. He was also second in the 110 high hurdles in 16.2 seconds.
As part of a distance-running sweep, Joe Hartnett ran 800 meters in 2:08 flat, while Mark McGurrin covered the mile in 4:28.3. Paul Merriman (9:54.4) held off Andrew Roache (9:54.7) to prevail in the 3,200-meter run. Vin Nguyen won the discus, throwing it 115 feet 1 inch, while Ryan Jones had a top long jump of 19 feet 6 inches.
Just as important was the fact that F-M swept all the relays. Merriman, Mcgurrin, Alex Hatz and Andrew Veilleux prevailed in the 4×800 (9:00.2), while Veilleux and Hatz helped Hartnett and A.J. Blitz prevail in the 4×400 in 3:37.8. The Hornets’ 4×100 quartet finished in 48.2 seconds.
Over in the girls meet, the activity included Maggie Malone posting the fastest Section III time this spring in the 1,500-meter run, winning in 4:45.7 as Courtney Chapman won the 800 in 2:24 flat and Jillian Fanning needed 10:13 to prevail at 3,000 meters.
Not only did Katie Sischo blaze to first in the 400-meter dash (1:00.2), she teamed with Malone, Kathryn Fanning and Audrey Wallace to take the 4×400 in 4:17.4. Both Fannings were on the Hornets’ winning 4×800 side as it posted a time of 10:56.3.
Corcoran swept through the sprints and nearly won all the field events, too, but Jhoville Pommells gave F-M some crucial points as she won the shot put with a toss of 29 feet 6 inches.
