On Friday, the Liverpool softball team will board a plane, heading to Florida, and the Disney World Sports complex, for a full week of work – and some fun, too. The Warriors go there with a 2-0-1 record, having survived a tough gauntlet of three games in four days, all of them decided late – or, in the case of the 4-4 tie with Cicero-North Syracuse on a chilly April 9, not decided at all. It culminated Monday afternoon with pitching ace Tiffany Sampere surviving a terrific duel with Fayetteville-Manlius hurler Amy Bright and prevailing 1-0. That only run came in the first inning, without the benefit of a hit. On a dropped third strike, Abby Romano hustled to first base, then stole second and came around to score when a throw to third went off target. Bright settled down and, over the first three innings, struck out eight Liverpool hitters, immediately putting pressure on Sampere to match that effort. Though the Hornets got runners on base in each of the first four innings, Sampere kept stranding them, five in all, ending each of those frames with a strikeout. F-M would keep trying, though. Liz Linderman walked with two out in the bottom of the sixth, but Romano threw her out as she tried to steal second. And in the seventh, Hornets pinch-hitter Kristen Carey doubled to the wall. With the tying run at second, Sampere calmly struck out Meg Stoeckel, her 12th K of the afternoon, matching Bright’s total. Liverpool won despite getting just two hits.
