With the Christian Brothers Academy baseball team, regular behavior includes a lot of winning and a lot of runs required to get those wins. So when the Brothers opened its 2010 season at Chittenango last Monday afternoon, the usual elements were in place as it beat the Bears 14-6. Wasting no time, CBA took advantage of poor Chittenango defense and got six runs in the first inning, with Riley Dixon’s home run part of the barrage. Though the Bears answered with five runs of its own (most of them from Greg Jasek’s grand slam) in the bottom of the first to make it 6-5, the Brothers would not trail. It used two runs in the second inning to make it 8-5, then got away with three-run outbursts in the fourth and sixth. Not only did Anthony Cirillo pitch and earn the win, he doubled and drove in a team-best four runs as part of CBA’s 16-hit attack. Dixon and Shaun McGraw each had two RBIs as Pat Wiese doubled and joined Bryant Moore and Steve Gangemi with single RBIs. It was Moore that would provide much more production at the plate on Thursday during CBA’s 12-6 victory over Homer. Every time he went to bat, Moore seemed to do something special. He smashed two home runs, a double and a single on his way to six RBIs as the Brothers got five runs in the first inning and would never trail. Dan Patane also went deep with a solo home run as he, along with Wiese, Cirillo, McGraw and Pete Corasaniti, earned single RBIs. Tim Hobb pitched and earned the win, with Luke Auetzhauser appearing in relief. CBA’s softball team also began a new season last Monday by going to Cortland and registering lots of offense in a 14-2 romp of the Purple Tigers. The Brothers scored in each of the first six innings, piling up 20 hits. Jordan Sheridan, in support of her own complete-game pitching effort, tripled twice and finished with four RBIs, while Maggie Fennell drove in two runs. Molly O’Brien, Marisa Hamel, Kelly Bewley, Kaitlin McIntyre and Alexis Mento each had one RBI. Then the Brothers turned around to visit Marcellus on Wednesday afternoon and pulled out a 1-0 victory over the Mustangs. Much of the game was a terrific pitcher’s duel between Sheridan and the Mustangs’ Molly MacLachlan. Combined, they allowed just seven hits — four by CBA, three by Marcellus. Sheridan finished with 13 strikeouts and MacLachlan recorded 10. However, one hit made the entire difference as, in the top of the fourth, O’Brien caught a hanging pitch by MacLachlan and ripped it over the fence for a solo home run. The Brothers’ win streak halted Thursday in a 7-4 defeat to Homer, despite rallying from an early 4-0 deficit with four runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie it. Hamel drove in two runs as Mento and McIntyre each had one RBI. Homer would answer with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and went back in front for good. Sheridan took the loss as Homer’s Ashley Crossway led her side with four hits.
