We’re holding off some of our celebration until next week to give folks something to do during spring break, but we’re still hard at work doing all those important things libraries do. Of course, that means bringing you great books, movies and music, but it also means: providing support through difficult times; entertaining programs to share with friends and neighbors; a place to show off community talents; and an opportunity to develop new skills.
Library Week opportunities
You can do all of these things this week and all year around at BPL.
At 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, jobseekers are invited to join in as Chris Aylward provides a free clinic on interviewing skills as part of our continuing series Jobseekers Lifeline. It’s a great way to improve your chances in the employment lottery in a nation where more than 3 million citizens have now been officially unemployed for over a year.
On a lighter note, armchair travelers can visit the beautiful and historic beaches of Normandy with Al Jenner and Mark Ambrose as they share tales of their recent bicycle tour at 10 a.m. Thursday April 15. A donation for the library Friends group is requested.
Later that afternoon, Anime fans are invited to celebrate spring and maybe even spring rolls at 3:30 p.m. with our first showing of “Fairytail,” a popular animated series.
Finally, crafters can finish out the week at 10 a.m. Saturday April 17 by making a Little Cathead Basket. Registration for the program is required and there is $15 fee for materials.
Vacation happenings at BPL
School is out, but Manic Mondays is still here for teens interested in scratching their creative itch. At 3 p.m. Monday April 19, wear your grubbies and we’ll break out the paints.
The Books for Breakfast group is also in session at 9 a.m. Tuesday April 20 with a discussion of the “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet,” a tale about the Japanese internment and its lasting effects set in Seattle by Jamie Ford. Refreshments will be served. New members are welcome.
Bubblemania
Break out of boredom and into bubbles with Bubble Man Doug Rougeux, a clown, juggler and performer of bubblicious feats. All ages will enjoy this family program at 2 p.m. Tuesday April 20, so mark your calendars.
Open Writers’ Group
Ideas are harder to juggle than bubbles, but it gets easier when you have support. Local writers meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday April 20 to share tips and encouragement.
Web wizardry
Web searches can be like department stores – they can easily overwhelm you with too many choices, many of them dubious. Join Julia, our resident tech wizard at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday April 21, and she’ll show you how to fine-tune your searches for better results.
Looking for something with a bit more history? Join Genealogist Louise Creighton as she offers personalized instruction on online tools for genealogical research at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday April 21. Both programs are held in the computer lab and seating is limited so registration is required.
April Mike
Celebrate spring with music and merriment at our long running, family-friendly Open Mike hosted by Merry Mischief at 7 p.m. Wednesday April 21. Performer sign-in begins at 6:30 p.m. and new faces are always welcome.
‘Die Fat or Get Tough!’
Most folks have been on a diet; many more than once, but few manage to keep the pounds off for long. What makes the difference between the fat and the fit? Join Post Standard columnist Bunny Dimmel at 7 p.m. Thursday April 22 for a discussion of this blunt spoken book.
Games at the library
Backgammon, chess, checkers and yes, PlayStation and Wii. Continue your vacation fun from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday April 22 with board, card and electronic games for all ages.
Make your own mark
Explore the fascinating world of traditional henna tattoos and design one of your own with Suzanne Masters from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday April 23 during Spring Break. Registration is required and minors must have parental permission because henna tattoos may last for several weeks.
In Stitches
Bring your needlework, crochet or knitting at 7 p.m. Wednesday April 28 and join others with an interest in stitchery.
Stock up for summer reading
It’s time to stock up for beach reading. We have a massive collection of great fiction and nonfiction for your summer reading pleasure. The last two days of the sale are bag days: a bag of books for $3 – but come early before the books, videos and music are picked over.
