It might be a while before the Skaneateles boys lacrosse team faces another serious challenge — perhaps until its April 24 showdown with LaFayette.
The Lakers, impressive in season-opening home wins over Auburn and Cazenovia, showed even more flair Tuesday night, when it went to the new turf at Alibrandi Stadium and crushed Christian Brothers Academy 19-3.
This game merely reinforced the approach Skaneateles has taken early this season. True, defense is still emphasized and important, but with a deep roster overflowing with goal-scoring talent, the Lakers aren’t afraid to put it the net — and often.
Quickly setting the right tone, Skaneateles bolted out to a 5-0 lead on the Brothers and didn’t allow a goal until the second quarter. Briefly, the momentum stopped, yet the Lakers still carried a comfortable 7-2 lead to the break.
Then came the real outburst — eight goals in the third quarter alone, which sent the margin well past double digits. What’s more, Skaneateles shut out CBA in the final period, even with the victory safely tucked away.
Five different players earned hat tricks, with Kelly Donigan backing up his three goals by earning a career-best six assists. Mike Richards and Paul O’Donnell each finished with four goals and one assist, while Kevin Rice got three goals and two assists. Tom Schoener had his own three-goal outing and Zach Brownlee found the net twice.
Having moved to 3-0, the Lakers got seven days to rest and fine-tune its game before hosting Westhill on Tuesday and going to Jordan-Elbridge on Thursday.
