During the Indians’ 4-0 sweep of the Red Devils Tuesday afternoon, Trevor Haskell led the way, earning a 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Matt McCall, as Paul Froass beat Dylan Duchene by those exact same scores.
In fourth singles, Shawn Ano shut out Mike Morgan 6-0, 6-0, while Andrew Parlow put together a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nick Fletcher.
The Red Devils would recover on Thursday to beat Whitesboro 4-3, the difference coming in a three-set doubles match where Shane Sullivan and Dan Walts held off Anthony Abdo and Nick Crocilla 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-2.
Meanwhile, in singles, McCall beat Drew Taylor 6-3, 7-5 and Duchene claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Pat McGrath. Back in doubles, James Neverette and Travis Reigner beat Korey Henderson and Kris Jones 7-5, 6-2.
In their own season-opening matches last Tuesday, Canastota and Chittenango had vastly different results. The Raiders swept past Herkimer, 5-0, while the Bears ran into long-time power Jamesville-DeWitt and lost to the Red Rams by that same margin.
Canastota only had to win two contested matches, both in doubles. Jay Adams and Jeff Young swept past Colt Whaley and Phil Pham 6-1, 6-1, while Dan Kilsh and Marvin Wilke earned a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Mike Allcorn and Nick Kinney. The singles trio of Sean Coppola, Aaron Starkey and Chris Sprague all claimed forfeits.
As for Chittenango, it could not gain a set from J-D. In singles, Scott Mohr had a 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Reed Tso, while Dave Beckah and Dave Beagal played in doubles and took a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Dave Rapp and Noah Kaplan.
A day later, Canastota lost 3-2 to Mount Markham as Coppola, Starkey and Jon Rouse all took singles defeats. In doubles, the Raiders saw Adams and Young beat Tim Roe and Annabel Joschko 6-3, 6-2, while Klish and Wilke beat Jessica VanWieren and Matt Litz 6-0, 6-0.
Rivals Hamilton and Morrisville-Eaton opened with each other on Wednesday, with the Emerald Knights beating the Warriors 4-1.
Both doubles matches went Hamilton’s way, as John Valencia and David Schutt swept Jimmy Johnston and Dakota Miller 6-0, 6-0, while Allen Schutt and Bailey O’Keefe earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ian Kendall and Taylor Smith.
Up in singles, the Emerald Knights added two more points. Josh Valencia handled Ty Banker 6-2, 6-4 as Andrew Powrie, in three sets, rallied past Alex Clark 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Marcus O’Hara salvaged a point for M-E when he beat Tom Bodnar 6-1, 6-4.
On Thursday, Chittenango would get in the win column with a 7-0 shutout of Fowler, which included three singles sweeps. Mohr beat Angel Menjivar 6-1, 6-4, as Connor Toth beat Varmun Kamara 6-0, 6-0 and Ryan Leonard topped Ibrahaim Al Waeli by those same scores.
