No decisions but plenty of opinions were heard Tuesday March 23 during the Camillus Town Board’s public hearing to consider amending a local law to include prohibition of hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracking, to release natural gas.
Many residents already oppose the process, while some posed questions to the board regarding the waste created and environmental impact.
There is no precedent of a municipality controlling the extraction process of natural gas, town attorney Dirk Oudemool said, but having a statute on the books may afford the town the authority in the future.
“Let’s go for it, put it in place and let somebody challenge it,” he added.
The public hearing will remain open for additional comment.
