Members of the Stanley B. Pennock VFW Post 2893 in Solvay were unpleasantly surprised last year when, in an effort to install an elevator in the building and make the hall more accessible, additional problems were exposed at the post’s existing home.
Correcting the issues would be costly, so the post opted to move out of the former St. Charles Church building at 517 Charles Avenue in Solvay and build new in Lakeland.
But building an entirely new home for the Pennock Post is not cheap, either.
So the VFW is reaching out to the community to seek donations toward the new building.
The new building will be about 6,000 square feet on one story. Bingo — the organization’s primary fundraiser — will be held in one hall which can seat about 275 people. Bingo is currently divided into two smaller rooms on two stories at the Charles Avenue building.
Individuals or organizations interested in donating to the VFW can contact Stephen Bagozzi at 468-2769. The post still has to raise roughly $367,000 to build its new home.
