An agreement has been reached by Verizon, the towns of Lysander and Van Buren and the village of Baldwinsville, which means Verizon customers within the three municipalities could begin receiving the company’s services in the near future.
The town of Van Buren and the village of Baldwinsville both extended an invitation to Verizon to file an official application for a franchise with the three municipalities, and the town of Lysander was expected to do the same at their Monday meeting. Once filed, the municipalities will hold a joint public hearing to get public input, and if everything is satisfactory, the agreement would be approved.
The 10-year agreement includes a $2,000 per year donation to Public Access Channel Baldwinsville, a point of contention that was holding up negotiations.
B’ville seats uncontested
It’s a quiet election year for the village of Baldwinsville.
Three trustee seats are uncontested leaving incumbents Bruce Stebbins, John Salisbury and Melinda Shimer without opponents. Stebbins is running on the Village Party line while Salisbury and Shimer are running on the Citizen’s Party line.
The election will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday March 16 at the village hall, 16 W. Genesee St. in Baldwinsville.
Village submits Community Development application
Village officials have submitted Baldwinsville’s 2010 application for Community Development Funds.
The total request is for $200,000 in Community Development Funds, which would pay for 75 percent of two projects: Mercer Park improvements including pavilion restoration, parking lot improvements, landscaping and reconstruction of the public boat ramp ($100,000); and a 2,700- by 5-foot linear walkway along Meigs Road connecting all living complexes on the road to the business district on Downer Street ($100,000). Applications can be viewed on the village web site (baldwinsville.org).
Community Development Funds are grants made available through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development for distribution by the county to local municipalities for local improvement projects. Should the grant(s) be approved, the village would be responsible for funding 25 percent of the total project ($268,000 total, village responsible for $68,000), which includes in-kind services, fund-raising and taxation.
Village Square plans
Environmental Design and Research (EDR) gave the village board a demonstration regarding plans for the Village Square (former site of the Harrington Firehouse). Design aspects included more green space and less pavement, possible fishing areas and a potential pedestrian bridge. The plans can be viewed on the village web site at baldwinsville.org.
