Three Cazenovia wrestlers would make it to the semifinal round during Saturday’s Section III Division II championship meet at Utica Memorial Auditorium — and two of them would end up in third place. Freshman Brad Nardella came in as the no. 2 seed at 103 pounds. He needed just 52 seconds to pin Ryan Snyder (Copenhagen) in the quarterfinals before running into Holland Patent’s Eric Stevens in the semifinals and losing a 9-4 decision. Unfazed, Nardella conquered the consolation bracket, first by pinning Tim Fargo (Lowville) in 54 seconds, then by holding off top seed Jeron Tanner (South Jefferson) 5-2 to finish in third place with a season record of 32-6. As for eighth-grader Nick Petroff, he went out as the no. 3 seed at 96 pounds, holding off Ryan Snow (General Brown) 2-0 in the quarterfinals, but never keeping up with Sandy Creek’s Jake Benedict in a 10-2 semifinal defeat. Moved into the consolation bracket, Petroff, like Nardella, would prevail, shutting out Greg Hadcock (Hannibal) 8-0 and rolling past Garrett Kubinski (South Lewis) 10-2 in the third-place match. Overall, Petroff went 27-6 this winter. Jake Wilson won twice in the early rounds at 130 pounds, blanking Sean Noble (Mount Markham) 9-0 and edging past Kevin O’Rourke (Adirondack) 3-0. But after a 4-1 semifinal defeat to Frankfor-Schuyler’s Joe DelConte, Wilson struggled, falling to Mitch Janes (Port Byron) and Ryan Waite (Ilion) to fall back into sixth place as his 28-12 season concluded. Dylan Perry, wrestling at 145 pounds, pinned Frank Davis (Homer) in 3:44 in the opening round, only to lose in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion, Canastota’s Tyler Sirota, in a 13-6 defeat. A consolation defeat to Danny Cleveland (Sherburne-Earlville) left Perry with a 32-11 mark on the mat. Ryan Cook (23-14) lost in the first round at 112 pounds to Watertown IHC’s Nick Koelmel in a 6-3 decision. Teddy Kugler (125 pounds) took a 9-3 first-round defeat to Tully’s Harold Davis to finish at 27-11 overall. In the Division II (small school) team event, Cazenovia finished 14th, with 44 points. Phoenix rolled to the top spot with 174 points.
