Despite a fair share of ups and downs this winter, the Skaneateles boys ice hockey team still finished on top of the Division II West standings by two points. The Lakers clinched the regular-season league title by going to Ontario Bay last Tuesday night and rolling to a 6-1 victory over the Storm. It was close for a while, as Ontario Bay’s defense prevented big damage and Skaneateles only led 2-0 through two periods. But that didn’t last, as the Lakers put things away with a four-goal third period. Dan Tarolli, with two goals, led a well-balanced attack where Jon Rogallia and John Bronk each had one goal and one assist, with Dylan VanHoltz and Brendan Major also scoring. Sean Cooney, Jake Bird and Zach Augustine also earned assists. In the final league standings, Skaneateles edged out Corcoran for that top spot with a 13-2-1 mark (15-4-1 overall) and 27 points. The Cougars were second with a record of 12-3-1 (14-5-1 overall) and 25 points. They split their regular-season meetings, each winning at home — 6-4 for Skaneateles Dec. 15 at Allyn Arena, then 5-2 for the Cougars a month later at Meachem Rink. Where the Lakers finished in front was the fact that it swept two games against third-place Cortland/Homer (24 points), while Corcoran lost to the Golden Eagles on both occasions.
