Several football stars from Westhill, Marcellus and Bishop Ludden earned places on the All-State team as chosen by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
Section III Class B champion Westhill placed Dan Ross on the first team at wide receiver, while Marcellus quarterback Will Fiacchi and kicker Brendan Carey joined Ross on the first-team offense.
Not far behind them, two more Mustangs, wide receiver Dan Rudy and lineman Niko Wagner, made the Class B second team, while the Warriors’ Tom Fisher earned a third-team honor at tight end and Kevin Wilson did the same at linebacker. Westhill’s Jeff Law was a fourth-team defensive back.
On Wednesday, both Fiacchi and Fisher sign their national letters of intent — Fiacchi to attend the University of Albany, Fisher to play at Fordham University in the Bronx.
Bishop Ludden’s Omar Osbourne made the Class C All-State second team, with Mark DeAngelis a third-team selection at wide receiver. Quarterback John Rooney (who will play baseball at Siena next year) and defensive lineman Mike Hogan made the fourth team.
Some of these players could be named to the Upstate New York team for the inaugural New York State High School Football Classic at the Carrier Dome.
It was announced this week that the game will take place in the Carrier Dome June 6 and will feature all-star teams from Upstate (Albany and points west and north) and Downstate (Catskills, Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island). In addition, more than 100 underclassmen will take part in a combine, and youth clinics are expected, too.
