Cicero-North Syracuse’s wrestling team went to Fayetteville-Manlius last Wednesday night and put together a 50-24 victory over the Hornets, finishing its CNY Counties League schedule with a 6-3 mark.
Meanwhile, Liverpool ended up 4-5 in league matches following a 35-24 defeat to Rome Free Academy.
The Northstars’ trip to F-M came four days after it hosted the Section III Dual Meet, where South Jefferson beat Fulton to win the title for the first time.
Now getting its own win, CNS began with two important decisions as Kiel Dyer, at 130 pounds, beat Connor Wingate 8-3 and Matt Dunham (135 pounds) got past Jon Hajduk 8-4 before Patrick Dyer (140 pounds) claimed a forfeit.
F-M used pins in the next two matches to gain a 12-12 tie, but CNS won the next seven matches to run away, starting with James Segars, at 160 pounds, earning an 11-1 decision over Mike Mannion.
Following a forfeit to Todd Hagger (171 pounds), the Northstars saw Ariel Anoceto (189 pounds) pin Miguel Garcia in 1:21 and Matt Mastro (215 pounds) shut out Mick O’Bryan 11-0.
Clayton D’Onofrio won a 285-pound exhibition over Sam Wells with a second-period pin, with Dan Ciciarelli (103 pounds) claiming an injury default over Jacob Norton and Tony Battista (112 pounds) pinned Tim Byrnes late in the third period.
Liverpool’s home meet against RFA turned on the Black Knights winning in each of the higher weight classes. Liverpool could not get a point from 160 pounds on up as Matt Call (160), Brandon Capria (189) and Mike Reed (215) all took shutouts.
Meanwhile, Derek Eason, the top-ranked Section III Division I (large school) wrestler at 152 pounds, pinned DeVante Marshall in 1:44, though the quickest pin went to Tyler Kolbasook (130) and his 35-second win over Francis Flanigan. Mende Cukalevski (145) took 2:53 to pin James Yates as Casey Guilfoil (112) claimed a forfeit.
In two close matches, Liverpool saw defeat, as Tyler Eason, at 119, fell to Antonio DeLuco 5-3 and Justin Thompson (125) had a 6-0 loss to Mike Madonia.
Liverpool will be going back to CNS next Saturday to compete in the Section III Class AA championship meet, which starts at 10 a.m.
