With a key early-season conquest on Friday night, the West Genesee boys swim team took charge of the CNY Counties League – and might not get caught. The Wildcats went to Auburn and, in a battle of undefeated teams, got all the points it needed for an 88-82 victory over the Maroons, its 15th meet win in a row. Ben Seketa gave the Wildcats two victories early in the meet. First, Seketa teamed with Pat O’Donnell, Tyler Zapisek and Keegan Halsey to post a time of 1:46.85 and win the 200 medley relay. Then, on his own, Seketa posted his best time of the season in the 200 freestyle, winning in 1:47.64 before adding another victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:00.10. O’Donnell earned two of his own titles. In the 200 individual medley, he finished in a first-place clocking of 2:07.80, and O’Donnell went on to beat the field in the 100 backstroke in 57.92 seconds. After winning the 50 freestyle in 23.30 secondsa, Carson Elias was second in the 100 butterfly (55.67 seconds), just behind Lucas Zelehowsky (53.87 seconds). But Tyler Olson did win the 100 freestyle in 51.65 seconds, holding off Auburn’s Conner Klimmer (51.95) to prevail. WG won despite Auburn taking two out of three relays. Still, WG posted some good times as Elias, O’Donnell, Connor Agen and Tyler Olson swam the 200 medley in 1:34.33 (Auburn won in 1:33.55). Olson, Elias, Seketa and Agen finished the 400 freestyle relay in 3:28.45, just behind the Maroons (3:25.58). WG will now have nearly three weeks of rest and practice during the holiday break before its season resumes Jan. 6 with a home meet against Rome Free Academy.
