On a full Tuesday night of local high school girls volleyball, Christian Brothers Academy’s fast start continued with an impressive sweep over Chittenango, while Bishop Grimes beat Manlius-Pebble Hill.
The Brothers, unbeaten in three OHSL Freedom division matches (4-1 overall), took just three games to tame the Bears 25-17, 25-23, 25-15, as only the second game proved close.
Alex Horowitch set up points with her 18 assists. On a deep CBA front line, Emily Norkett had seven kills, plus two aces, while Maggie Fennell earned five kills and Jessie Bongiovanni got four kills. Lianna Artessa served up five aces.
As this went on, Bishop Grimes was winning the first two games over MPH 25-15 and 25-21. The Trojans pulled out the third game 25-23, but a close fourth game went to the Cobras as it closed out the match 25-21.
Courtney Henson mixed up 11 kills and six aces to lead the Grimes attack. Nicole Spiegel had three kills and four aces, while Carlie Benbenek got three kills and Francesca DiMura three aces. Nicole Russo had 11 assists, to go with three aces of her own.
Elsewhere in OHSL Freedom play, East Syracuse-Minoa lost in four games to Mexico. The Tigers won close 26-24 and 25-22 decisions in the first two games, only to have the Spartans win the third game 25-15 before Mexico held on in the fourth game, again by a 25-22 margin.
ESM lost despite Laura Adams earning nine kills and Norlene Remoliata adding six aces. Charlotte Visser (five kills) and Azra Jahic (four kills) worked on the front line, too, as Paige Holt fed them with 22 assists. Mexico had Liz Peters earn 14 kills and Macy Teifke add 30 assists.
In Jamesville-DeWitt’s 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 defeat to defending Class A champion Fulton, Mihcelle Dalallah had 10 assists, her passes going to Frannie Haunseiner (five kills) and Ally Loewy (four kills, two blocks). As for the Red Raiders, Lindsay Navagh had 21 assists as Karlee Osborn (seven kills) led a balance front line.
