Sacred Heart freshman Kiley Evans, of Cazenovia, was named the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week announced by the league office on Monday. It is the first rookie honor for Evans.
Evans’ breakout performance allowed the Pioneers to break into the win column with a 92-77 triumph over regional rival Harvard. The freshman netted a career-high 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting to sink the Crimson and contribute to the highest single-game scoring total (92) by a NEC team this season. She added seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals in 39 minutes of action against Harvard, who finished second in the Ivy League Preseason Poll after a WNIT appearance last year. Factoring in her performance (6 pts., 4 reb., 1 asst., 1 stl.) in a 50-49 setback to Villanova, Evans averaged 15.0 points, 5.0 boards, and 4.0 assists per game last week. The freshman scored two of her six points against the Wildcats on a pair of free throws that brought Sacred Heart within three points, 50-47, with 2:52 remaining in regulation.
