With their newly-minted Section III Class B crowns in tow, both of the Marcellus cross country teams went to SUNY-Plattsburgh — and went up against the best — in last Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.
The boys Mustangs, led by Jesse Garn, finished right in the middle of the 11-team state Class B field with 134 points. That wasn’t far from Honeoye Falls-Lima (Section V), who earned another state crown with 42 points.
Garn, a junior, covered the 3.1-mile Plattsburgh course in 15 minutes, 49.3 seconds, putting him in fifth place among Class B individuals as Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Alex Deir won in 15:41.9.
Freshman Ryan Manahan took 48th place, in 16:54.3, while senior Tom Riccardi was 55th in 16:59.1. Another senior, Mike Quercia, was 71st (17:11.3), with senior Mike Fallon 82nd (17:19.8), ahead of junior Nate Heath (18:01.0) and junior Owen Dean (18:14.7).
In the girls Class B state race, Marcellus claimed eighth place, with 190 points, as East Aurora (Section VI) continued its dynasty at the top, winning with 48 points.
Eighth-grader Rachel Garn led the Mustangs, claiming 30th place in a clocking of 19:14.5. Freshman Maggie Dunn was 66th in 20:21 flat, with fellow ninth-grader Molly McGuane 76th in 20:32.9.
Senior Laura Quercia (21:11.4) and sophomore Sarah Kelly (21:35.4) rounded out the scoring in 89th and 95th, respectively, with sophomore Olivia Higgins (22:08.8) and junior Hayley Knox (22:57.3) also running.
