In two different ways, the Fayetteville-Manlius cross country teams both lay claim to the top spots at Wednesday’s CNY Counties League American division championship meet at Central Square. The girls Hornets dominated, as always, earning seven of the top eight spots on its way to 17 points as West Genesee (64 points) claimed second place. Courtney Chapman covered the 3.1-mile Central Square course in 18 minutes, 23 seconds, beating teammate Jillian Fanning (18:33) by 10 seconds as Molly Malone finished third in 18:37. After WG freshman Laura Leff earned fourth place (18:54), the rest of F-M’s top runners took over. Mackenzie Carter was fifth, in 19:14, as Maggie Malone claimed sixth place (19:42), Hannah Luber was seventh (19:49) and Gennie Ariotti earned eighth place in 20:30. Over in the boys CNYCL American meet, F-M found itself in a tighter battle with West Genesee, but still came out on top, 23 points to 35. Central Square was third, just as in the girls race. Brendan Farrell won the individual championship in 16 minutes, 12 seconds, beating WG’s Steve Houghmaster by 10 seconds as Paul Merriman took third place in 16:27 and the Wildcats’ Billy Gabriel (16:32) was fourth. F-M claimed the title by earning three of the next four finishing spots around WG’s Sam Reedy. Andrew Roache was fifth, in 16:37, with Mark McGurrin (16:47) in sixth place and Ben Thomas eighth in 17:24. Alex Hatz, still recuperating from his August kidney surgery, worked his way to 13th place in a clocking of 18:04, just behind Owen Strong (17:43) in 11th place.
