Kelly Ristoff made sure that the Westhill girls soccer team did not get caught in the race for the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title. Ristoff’s pair of second-half goals pushed the Warriors past Marcellus 2-1 Saturday night as the two rivals ended up splitting their regular-season series. Ironically, in the first meeting on Sept. 30, Marcellus won by that same 2-1 margin, taking over first place in the OHSL Liberty at that time. Since then, though, the Mustangs had lost to Skaneateles, allowing Westhill to reclaim first place before the rematch of the two sides that have dominated the local Class B ranks over the last 15 years. In front of a large and loud crowd of partisans from both sides, Westhill and Marcellus played through a 0-0 first half, with few scoring opportunities on either side. As in the first meeting, Mustang defender Erin Walter shadowed Ristoff, and did a terrific job of it early on, forcing her outside to the corners, making her possessions less effective. It remained scoreless until the 48th minute, when the Mustangs’ Christa Rockburn passed to the left side, and Becca Eddy lofted a nifty shot that fitted just inside the right post and slid into the net. Less than three minutes later, Ristoff answered, firing a hard shot from the left side past Megan Tock into the top right corner of the net for a 1-1 tie. For a time, the defenses settled down, and the game appeared drifting to overtime until Ristoff struck again. With 8:04 to play in regulation, Ristoff positioned herself again with the ball just left of the net. This time, her hard shot glanced off a defender enough to change the flight and beat Tock for what proved to be the game-winner. Marcellus made a few runs down the stretch, but could not get a good close-up shot to pull back even. The Mustangs fell to 12-3 on the season, 10-3 in league play. Westhill, meanwhile, moved to 10-2-1 (10-1 league) and could clinch the outright regular-season league title with wins against Solvay or Skaneateles next week. Marcellus will play Phoenix.
