On the brink of finishing off an undefeated regular season, the Cazenovia field hockey team showed no signs of holding back.
When the Lakers visited Port Byron last Wednesday for its only game action of the week, it gradually took charge and beat the Panthers 5-1.
Led on the attack by Jillian Vogl, Abby Eschen and Tori Widrick, Cazenovia took 21 shots, pushing toward a 2-0 halftime edge and adding more offense in the late going.
Widrick, named the Channel 9 “Athlete of the Week”, picked up three assists, feeding it to Vogl, who had a three-goal hat trick, and Eschen, who got two goals and one assist. Belle Hoagland added an assist, too. Alison Short accounted for Port Byron’s lone goal.
This moved Cazenovia’s record to 13-0-1, with just games left next week against Oneida and Cortland, both of them at Burton Street, before the Oct. 25 announcement of the Section III playoff brackets.
