Pushed by a sweep of all the doubles contests, the Baldwinsville girls tennis team won its opening match of the 2009 season last Tuesday afternoon, beating Auburn 6-1.
The Bees’ doubles domination began with Rachel Taylor and Nicole Leader beating Jaime and Jenna Bruno 6-4, 6-4. Lauren Mautz and Kelly Falconer kept up the pace with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Hanora Barron and Aiswyara Irri.
Catherine Corsito and Katy Andersen got past Ashley Tuttle and Courtney Divito 6-0, 7-5, while Melinda Davis and Sarah Corcoran earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Molly Brown and Heidi Vanbuskirk.
Up in singles, Becky Guzzo lost a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Claire Minnoe. But Cali Nizamis swept past Palak Patel 6-3, 6-0, while Amari Pollard topped Samantha Cadwallader 6-1, 6-3.
B’ville kept up the fast pace in Thursday’s match against Corcoran, putting together a 7-0 sweep of the Cougars.
Between them, Guzzo, Nizamis and Corsito lost just three games in six sets of singles play. Sarah Mitchell and Colleen Morgan produced a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Jocelyn Reid and Ashley Brush, with the teams of Leader-Amari Pollard, Falconer-Andersen and Taylor-Mautz all winning in easy sweeps.
