Lakers go 0-1-1 in soccer tourney

Happy as the Cazenovia girls soccer team was with its big 1-0 win over Marcellus on Sept. 9, there was no time to celebrate, for just 48 hours later it was kicking off its annual tournament at the Fenner Street complex.

And if Cazenovia was too giddy, Chittenango took care of that problem in Friday’s opening round, rolling past the Lakers 4-1.

All through the first half, Cazenovia’s defense found itself chasing the potent duo of Jenna Barber and Brittney Tirabassi, who pushed the Bears to a 3-0 halftime edge.

Katie Kleine would score in the second half, but it was far from enough. Barber and Tirabassi each finished with two goals and one assist, and no matter what the Lakers tried, it couldn’t solve the goalie tandem of Shannon Willey and Brigid St. Leger, who combined for 13 saves.

A day later, Cazenovia met East Syracuse-Minoa, also from the Class A ranks, and played the Spartans to a 2-2 draw.

Both teams scored once in each half, as Kleine and Malmsheimer found the net for the Lakers and Romagnoli added an assist. In goal, Jamie Enders had 15 saves, but ESM used goals by Julie Maselli and Caitlyn Hennessey to keep up. Chittenango pounded Oneida 8-0 in the other Saturday contest.

Situated at 1-1-1, Cazenovia hosts early-season surprise Solvay on Tuesday before a Thursday visit to defending Class B champion Westhill.
