The 6th Annual Run for the Woods is set for Saturday Aug. 22. The event features a 1K Fun Run at 8:30 a.m. and 4K (2.5 miles) and 5-mile races at 9 a.m. All races begin in Marcellus Park and proceeds are split between Marcellus Rotary Club and Baltimore Woods Nature Center. Event Director Phyllis Danks said last year the event topped out at 140 participants, and the success of the races is due to the unique course. “So many road races are on the road, and that can be hard on runner’s knees and hips,” Danks, an avid runner, said. “This offers nice scenery, and they don’t have to worry about traffic.” Danks said the event consistently draws athletes from Marcellus High School — the girls varsity and JV soccer teams run the course each year — and often have runners from out of town and even outside New York State. Vacationers with a penchant for running have turned out for the race while in CNY to visit family and friends, Danks said. For those who have participated in the Run for the Woods in the past and appreciate the course, Danks said if the race gets much larger the trails at Baltimore Woods would probably no longer be used as part of the 4K and 5-mile courses. “Unfortunately, if we got bigger we probably wouldn’t be able to through Baltimore Woods because it would not be good for trails,” Danks said. “And it would be difficult with that many people because some of the trails are narrow.” So if you want to enjoy the unique semi-off-road Run for the Woods course, take your pick from the three races and register with Phyllis Danks, 463-9993. Registration forms are available at Baltimorewoods.org. Proceeds will go to the Marcellus Rotary general fund and toward scholarships awarded by Baltimore Woods Nature Center. Correction The print version of this story incorrectly reported that the Marcellus Optimist club was holding the Run for the Woods. The race is put on by the Marcellus Rotary and Baltimore Woods Nature Center.
