Seabury reaches top 10 at state golf tourney

Though still just finishing her sophomore season, Fayetteville-Manlius girls golfer Alex Seabury is a seasoned competitor, so the biggest of pressure situations doesn’t bother her.

Seabury felt quite comfortable during last weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship tournament at Foxfire in Baldwinsville, working her way into the top 10 by tournament’s end.

In her opening round on Saturday, Seabury shot 79, which lay 10 shots behind the leader, Ithaca’s Rebecca Studin.

During the final round on Sunday, Seabury added another 79, but the total of 158 moved her up the standings into a tie for sixth place with Pittsford Mendon’s Lizzie Blyth and earned her a medal, too, for her top-10 finish.

Studin fell back to an 81 and third place as Suzie Lee (Commack), with steady rounds of 75 and 73, won with a total of 148, a shot ahead of Wappingers’ Anna Ausanio. Each of the six golfers that finished ahead of Seabury was a junior or senior.

As to the other local golfers in the field, CBA’s Mary Fletcher put up rounds of 84 and 81 for a 165, tying for 18th place.

East Syracuse-Minoa’s Brittany Siechen, the reigning two-time Section III individual champion, struggled to a tie for 30th with 172, but still earned one of the eight “Good Sport” awards handed out by the NYSPHSAA at tournament’s end.

As a whole, the Section III squad tied Section V for second place, but Section V won the tie-breaker based on the eighth player’s score from the final round. Section XI (Suffolk County, Long Island) finished in front.

Earlier, at the state boys tournament at Cornell University’s course in Ithaca, Jamesville-DeWitt’s Jake Merola tied for 30th, with a total of 159, with J-D teammate Erik Davis and ESM’s Tyler Dattmore sharing 53rd place at 165.
