Mad after seeing the CNY Counties League National division meet slip away to Baldwinsville, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team got atonement six days later. The Northstars conquered the Bees, and everyone else, on its way to winning the Section III Class AA championship Wednesday at Bragman Stadium — the fourth straight year CNS has prevailed in this event. All told, the Northstars earned 103 points, more than enough as Rome Free Academy (80 points) edged B’ville (79 points) for the runner-up spot. Right from the opening 4×400 relay, Northstars were in charge. Brandon Marlow, Jake Whritenour, Zach Brown and Mike Fiume held on to win in a time of 3:25.89, just ahead of Liverpool (3:26.68) at the wire. CNS would win twice more. It went 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles as Alex Neumeister won in 56.84 seconds and Shaun Hyde (58.94 seconds) finished second. Then, in the 3,200-meter run, Chris Buchanan took his turn, prevaling in a time of 9:49.95, less than three seconds ahead of B’ville’s Nate McCabe. Already, Buchanan had finished third in the mile in 4:29.81. Fiume ran his way to second in the 400-meter dash (51.52 seconds), with Brown fifth in 51.99 seconds. Dan Fritz landed in third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:34.05) as Keenan Williams got fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.13 seconds. Jared Walther was fourth (2:04.02) in the 800-meter run. In the 4×100 relay, Vince St. James, Chuck Haven, Ben Brown and Malik Merritt finished third in 44.22 seconds as Walther, Whritenour, Nick Dunbar and Wes Kufel got fifth (8:36.25) in the 4×800. The Northstars gained lots of points in field events, including the pole vault, where Eric Sykora took second place, clearing 11 feet 6 inches, as Dillon McKee finished third (11 feet) and Brendan Ryan took sixth (10 feet 6 inches). Eric Munoz had a fourth-place long jump of 19 feet 10 3/4 inches, also getting fifth in the triple jump (41 feet 8 1/2 inches) as Jordan Thompson threw the shot put 48 feet 8 1/4 inches for third place.
